Fools Hate Knowledge

Are you a Narcissistic Parent?

If you’re a parent who takes ownership of your child’s successes then you might be a narcissistic parent. It’s one thing to be proud of your child and quite another to take complete credit for what they have accomplished. You are not raising an extension of yourself.

1) Narcissistic Parents Take Ownership of Their Children's Successes

2) Narcissistic Parents Struggle with Empathy and Emotional Connection

I'm Pretty Pumped Up!

My legs feel like Jell-O! That’s good, right? I’ll post what I did today on MFP. I have some good news. My BMI went from a 32 to a 31. I’m pretty pumped about THAT! I’ll take it! It’s the little victories, right?

I Refuse to Give Up Hope

Swimming, Singing & Strings

I stayed up until 2 o’clock in the morning trying to figure out the parks and recreation web site. They released all the new swimming dates last night at midnight and in order to ensure my kids swim this fall I needed to register and pay for their lessons online ASAP. After trying to figure out the faulty online registration process I finally got their classes paid for. They’ll be swimming every weekend starting in September.

This year as a fourth grader Fiona has the opportunity to be in a lot more than just the general music class they offer at school. She has decided to sign up for Free Spirit as well as Strings. Free Spirit is a performing choir that will meet after school one day a week to practice. They will be performing in the Holiday Program, the Black History Program, and the End of the Year Program. Fiona loves to sing so this is right up her alley.

Fiona is also determined to learn how to play the violin. I’m excited for her to explore the instrumental aspects of music. Their after school practices are do-able because they are held on a day different from Free Spirit. The good news is if she has any questions about how to read her music I’ll be able to help her out! I will not be harping on her to practice. That will be her gig.

Let's get this out of the way, shall we?

Yesterday I stepped on the scale and it was as if I had lost 15 lbs all over again. Sweet!

Today I stepped on the scale and it says I’ve only lost 10 lbs. Yep, I had to put four stones back into the “lbs 2 go” jar.

I take full responsibility. I did not do the work. I will do better.

My weight progress used to be 15 lbs lost on My Fitness Pal. Now it's back to 10 lbs lost.

I think Treadmill Time is going to have to join the same ranks as my Coffee Time. Not Before Coffee needs to be Not Before Treadmill Time.

I may even need to give certain things up until I reach some of my short term goals to ensure that I'm not missing anything. I know what those areas of my life are that need tweaking.

It is what it is...until next Friday. I won't give up. I'll keep plugging away one lb at a time.

Empathy is when you can put yourself in another person’s place. You can imagine what that person is going through, how it must feel, and how your life would be if you were them. That is part of what makes us human. When you lack empathy, you lose all that makes life worth living. That is dangerous.

It was a Great 1st Day of School

I love Fiona’s assignment notebook the school gives the kids in the fourth grade. On the calendars inside the notebook are little reminders for the month. This month’s reminder: Respect Yourself with a Drug-Free Life!

Overall the kids had a great first day of school. Fiona said it was a GREAT day. Kinsley said from a scale of 1 to 10 her day was a 10. Then she said from a scale of 1 to 100 her day was a 100.

Three Huge Mistakes Parents Make

My sister posted this article on her facebook page. After reading the whole article I thought to myself, "Right On!"

The article is in four parts: 1) We Risk Too Little 2) We Rescue Too Quickly 3) We Rave Too Easily 4) Eight Steps Toward Healthy Leadership

This article is SPOT ON. I read it—ALL of IT. I could not agree more!

I would like to take it one step further and say we have a bunch of narcissists raising the next generation, too. Everyone is too damn controlling.

I see parents teaching their kids how to disengage the world.

My biggest pet peeve is parents who refuse to work with educators and community volunteers. They think life is this pretty shiny perfect box with a bow on top.

They see their children as extensions of themselves instead of as individuals.

The other thing that was mentioned in this article was drawing the line on drug abuse, etc. I was glad to see that because when it comes to THAT I am a freaking 747!

If you decide to read this article I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. What's your initial reaction? Did it stop and make you think about a few things? Does it remind you of anyone you know? Has it changed your mind about your own parenting style? Feel free to chime in!

The Kids are Super Excited

For the Love of Sisters

Our 2nd Grader

Our 4th Grader

The kids are super excited for their first day of school. Can you believe they are asleep? I sure can’t! When I was a kid I could not sleep the night before the first day of school. I wonder if I will be able to sleep tonight.

Back to School Hair Cuts - Yes Please!

Remember my Cut, Color & Wax post?

The gal who cut, colored and blew out my hair did an amazing job! It was such a positive experience I think I will continue to go back to that place on a regular basis. It's nice to have have my grays gone!

She did a great job on the brows, too. She did tell me that my brows looked great and that she was just going to clean them up a bit. I pluck my brows myself so that made me feel good about the job I was doing on them.

I love my experience so much I thought it would be fun to take the girls to the salon instead of the place we usually take them to. It's a special occasion! They go back to school tomorrow! I can't wait to see what she will do to their hair!! They are pretty excited about it, too.

Oh, you know all those pinterest pins I posted? She didn't even need to see those. I told her what I wanted, explained my lifestyle to her and how I fix my hair, and she just did her thing! But, I'm a pretty easy client. I don't have to be in control all the time and I know if my hair winds up being shorter than I had anticipated it will grow back. Hair does that.

I LOVE letting the experts take over and she is good at what she does!!

Easy Peasy - Happy Me!! :):)

Back to School is so much Fun!

Back-to-School is so much fun. I love everything about it! The kids are super excited to get going on Wednesday. Meet the teacher/walk to school was a big success. We met Fiona and Kinsley’s teachers tonight and enjoyed some ice-cream on the walk home. This is Fiona’s last year at this school. Hard to believe she started five years ago. This year she will get to be someone’s kindergarten buddy. I LOVE that! Some of Kinsley’s closest friends from last year are in her class this year. I can tell it’s going to be a great school year!

Oh Marbles is Right! LOL

Oh Becki!!!

You cracked me up yesterday when you wrote:

Oh Marbles!!!

That's exactly how I was feeling about it, too. :):)

I weighed myself and had to throw a rock back.

My week pretty much sucked in the exercise department. I was feeling a little down, too. I snapped out of it though which is good. You know me, it doesn't take long.

I chose not to take a picture of my marbles. In fact, I probably will only take new pictures of my marble jars once or twice a month when there is progress that you can actually see.

I will admit, my clothes are starting to feel looser on me - I will take it. I know the inches come off quicker than the lbs anyway so I'm not going to let this hiccup get me down.

I picked up a community center punch card this week. It's $25 for 20 visits and I can use them any time I want to. I don't have to use them or lose them. My husband can use them, too. Each punch is good for that whole day so if I want to go in the morning and go back again in the afternoon, I totally can! Kids are free!! There is not a gym membership anywhere in town that I know of that beats that!

This is going to work out great in the winter when I can't get outside. I was thinking of making it a routine. You know, drop the girls off at school and then head to the community center to exercise.

They have an indoor track, elliptical, treadmills, weights, weight machines, exercise balls - the works!! I have know idea why I didn't know about this before.

I know I will get back on track. I'm not gonna let this get me down!!! Still feeling good!!!

Oh Marbles!!! LOL He he he - Until Next Week!! :):)

10 On Tues: Cut, Color & Wax

I have an appointment this week to have a cut, color and wax! I’m excited about it because it’s been awhile since I splurged a little on my appearance.

I’ve never had my brows waxed professionally before so I am looking forward to seeing what someone else thinks of my brow line. Who knows—next time you see me I may have pretty sleek looking eyes.

I’m also thinking of doing something drastically different to my hair. The beautiful part about my hair is that it grows out pretty fast. So if I try something completely out of my comfort zone I know it will be okay.

My sister Kim hooked me up with a gal who has cut hair for quite a long time. I think she used to work in New York City so I am anxious to see what she will do with me. I’ve watched Kim come out with some pretty sweet hair styles so I am familiar with this gal’s work.

I cannot WAIT to see what she is going to do to me!

I’m also planning to splurge on the girls before they head back to school. Fiona has been letting her bangs grow out for about a year now so it’s probably time to have some layers added for LONG hair. Kinsley plans to keep her bangs and has decided to grow her hair out LONG, too.

Here are 10 of my favorite hair pins from Pinterest:

My Rude and Immature Relative

How do you handle a relative who is obnoxious, hurtful and just plain vulgar? In my opinion, saying something classy or witty isn’t going to make a difference, but… Watch:

Kudos: The Dr. Laura Blog

The Bible is Clear about No Contact

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH SUCH PEOPLE.

They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

New Bike for Miss K! :)

Kinsley's Daddy surprised her with a new bike yesterday. She had no idea she was going to get a new bike. She has completely outgrown her old bike.

Sock Monkey likes Kinsley's new bike, too! ;)

Kinsley's New Bike :)

Beautiful Butterflies xxoo

Lots of bright colors, too! :)

The 3 B's: Barbie Bell, Basket & Butterflies :):)

I posted a video of her on facebook riding up and down our street on her new bike. She gets around pretty good! We've been enjoying bike riding as a family a lot this summer.

One Last Hurrah for the Summer

Can you believe summer time is about over? We've had a pretty busy summer.

Over the weekend we enjoyed having our niece and nephew over for a sleepover and then some swimming. It was a bit on the chilly side but still do-able. We swam, threw a ball around the pool, jumped off the high dive, water jogged, listened to some music, shivered a little bit BUT overall I think we had a BLAST.

My nephew Eli even fixed our van door which has been stuck for months!!! :)

Afterward we had dinner at their house and I got lots and lots of mosquito bites.

Everyone is excited for school to start!!

At the top of the page from right to left we have the oldest to the youngest with the grades they are about to go into: C 6th, J 5th, F 4th, K 2nd, E 1st.

Level 5 Skills - Completed!

Fiona passed her level 5 swim class on the first go-around. I was not expecting that at all! They say most kids tend to repeat level 5 just like they do level 4 but not Fiona. She's moving on to level 6! We may have to look into seeing what the swim team has to offer? Until then, level 6 here she comes!!

Here's what her instructor had to say: "Fiona is a wonderful little worker! She improved greatly on her flip turns! Her backstroke flip turns still need work, but those will come with practice! Keep up the good work!"

Here's what she mastered:
  • Shallow-angle dive from the side (in water at least 9 feet deep)
  • Shallow-angle dive, glide two body lengths and begin any front stroke (in water at least 9 feet deep)
  • Tuck surface dive, submerging completely
  • Pike surface dive, submerging completely
  • Front flip turn while swimming
  • Tread water, 5 minutes
  • Front crawl, 50 yards
  • Butterfly, 25 yards
  • Elementary backstroke, 50 yards
  • Back crawl, 25 yards
  • Standard scull, 30 seconds
  • Sidestroke, 25 yards
  • Safety Topics
  • Exit Skills Assessment #1
  • Exit Skills Assessment #2
Here's what she needs to practice:
  • Backstroke flip turn while swimming
Awesome job, Fiona!!!

Level 5 Skills - Good Job!

Kinsley is Great swimmer! I am so pleased with all of her hard work. There are not a whole lot of kids her age who can swim as good as she can. If she were to fall off the side of a boat into the ocean she could totally make it. She is not afraid to put her head in the water. In fact, most of her best swimming is done completely under water.

This go around she completely ditched her goggles, too. She said, "Mom...I don't need these any more." Okay, Kinsley!! Awesome because really don't need those. The best part is she made that decision for herself with no coaxing or influence from me.

She really wanted to pass level 5 this go around. She was pretty bummed out when she got her report card and realized she had to repeat level 5. That's okay Kinsley!! You still rocked the class!! In fact, her instructor had this to say: "Great job, Kinsley! You've improved so much with your butterfly and front crawl. Make sure you believe in yourself and keep practicing and I'm sure you'll be fine."

There are a few things she needs to practice and she herself admitted she should probably repeat the class. I am really proud of the fact that she recognizes on her own the need to continue so she can keep improving and continue to build up her stamina.

Here's what she mastered:
  • Shallow-angle dive from the side (in water at least 9 feet deep)
  • Shallow-angle dive, glide two body lengths and begin any front stroke (in water at least 9 feet deep)
  • tuck surface dive, submerging completely
  • Pike surface dive, submerging completely
  • Tread water, 5 minutes
  • Front crawl, 50 yards
  • Butterfly, 25 yards
  • Elementary backstroke, 50 yards
  • Back crawl, 25 yards
  • Standard scull, 30 seconds
  • Sidestroke, 25 yards
  • Safety Topics
  • Exit Skills Assessment #1
Here's what she needs to practice:
  • Front flip turn while swimming
  • Backstroke flip turn while swimming
  • Breaststroke, 25 yards
  • Exit Skills Assessment #2
Awesome job, Kinsley!!!

Friday Weigh-In: Down Zero

I weighed myself today. I haven’t lost and I haven't gained. This is not unusual for me. I am happy I did not gain. It’s not always easy to exercise when you’re sick. I’m proud of myself that I made myself do some treadmill time even if it was just for a little on the days I wasn’t feeling well.

Because I have lost 15 lbs overall, My Fitness Pal wanted me to re-calculate my goals as far as eating and calorie intake goes—so I did that and my daily caloric total for my height and weight is 1200. At some point I will get back to tracking my food but for now I will just watch what I’m eating and eye-ball my portions.

My goal for now is just to get into the habit of being more active on a daily basis. It helps that my husband likes to go for bike rides with the kids at the end of the day. It’s so much more fun to be with other people when I’m working out.
